PLATFORMS:
Palm Pilot and compatibles, PalmOS 2.0 and higher

Memory: 16K

Description:

Recorder Digits for Palm is a Palm version of the PC program of the
same name. It displays both standard and alternate fingerings for alto
and soprano/tenor recorders.

----------------------------------------------------------------
What's New

New in Version 1.10:

-> Similar to the change made in the Windows Version 2.40, the
Palm program now uses "smart" text that takes into account
the type of recorder being displayed - i.e. alto or soprano.

This affects information displayed by Info buttons. In the
prior version, notes were always mentioned using their alto
name. For example, on the Info button for an Octave 2
fingering, the prior version displayed (regardless of the
       recorder type):

           "Norm A>G tr..."

Version 1.10 displays (when the recorder type is alto):

           "Standard A to G trill..."

or (when the recorder type is soprano):

           "Standard E to D trill..."

The wording has also been expanded to be less cryptic.

-> The memory requirement has expanded from 15K to 16K. This is
not because the wording for Info buttons was expanded (with the
new substitution technique, the text contained in the program
actually requires less memory), but because of the additional
coding logic required to implement smart text.

-> To conserve memory, the Palm version does not use enharmonic
names in the text displayed by Info buttons, or on the note's
name on the title bar (it doesn't say "G#/Ab" like the Windows
version, but just "Ab"). Prior to version 1.10, it always used
the "flat" name. With version 1.10, for some notes it uses the
sharp name, for some the flat name. For example, it uses the
terms "F#" and "C#," but also "Ab" and "Bb." I tried to pick
the most common way a note appears in music (e.g. you more
often see a C# than a Db). I think this works pretty well,
although some unfortunate wording does occur (for example
"Standard Eb to C# trill"; "Standard Ab to F# trill").

New in Version 1.02:

-> reduced program memory requirement to 15K by using line drawing
instead of bitmaps in some areas.

-> fixed bug - Octave buttons not being updated if sharp or flat
button caused crossing of octave boundary.

Installation:

Although this is a Palm program, you must first unzip the installation
files onto a Windows PC and then do an "Install" of the PRC file onto
your Palm device via a HotSync.

To install the zip file, you should unzip it into a PC directory. If
you already have the PC version of Recorder Digits on your system, you
can safely unzip the rcdpalm.zip files into the same directory, since
none of the file names are in conflict.

Or you can use an entirely different directory.

Unzip the rcdpalm.zip files into any directory you want. If you
installed an earlier version before, just unzip the new version into the
old directory, which will replace the old version with the new.

The files contained in the archive are:

-> rcdigits.prc - the program itself to install onto the Palm
  -> rcdpalm.hlp  - Windows help file
-> rcdpalm.cnt - contents file for the help system
  -> readpalm.txt - this file

To install the program onto your Palm, follow instructions in your Palm
handbook in the section "Installing Add-on Applications."

----------------------------------------------------------------
The Help system

For documentation, I have created Help files useable on the PC. To see
the help, bring up Windows Explorer and doubleclick on the rcdpalm.hlp
file.

----------------------------------------------------------------
Uninstall:

To uninstall Recorder Digits for Palm from your Palm device, follow
instructions in your Palm handbook. To remove the files from your PC,
just delete them. Recorder Digits installation consists of nothing but
the files mentioned above, and does not make any registry entries or
put anything into any other directory.

When you use the Help system, the Windows Help system file rcdpalm.gid
is created in the PC directory where the help files were installed.
This file can be safely deleted at any time.

Recorder Digits is freeware and may be distributed freely, provided
that the PRC file and supporting help files are unmodified.
